“SO, YOU AND THAT BOY must be back in good graces,” Momma says, entering my room, fresh from her lunch shift.

I glance up, setting my guitar aside. “What are you talking about?”

She folds her arms across her chest, grinning. “Don’t think I haven’t heard about the whole Jace thing. It’s been a hot topic in the kitchen for weeks. Plus, your eye twitched like crazy at the engagement party.”

I grimace. Darn Grandma Sue’s big mouth. And my stupid eyes. “It’s not a thing, really. He comes in McKiver’s to eat sometimes. That’s it.”

She walks in, taking a seat in my desk chair. “What’re you working on?”

I cover my notebook with a pillow, grimacing at the suggestiveness in her voice. “Stuff.”

She stretches her neck, as if she can read the thin pen-marked page from there. “Any love songs maybe?”

The tinting of my cheeks gives me away. She laughs, covering her mouth. “Are you going to text him again?”

I lean up, taking time to pop my back. I’ve asked myself the same question since Jace apologized last month. He didn’t stand me up on purpose. He could mean what he says. But hurting those few weeks, even due to a misunderstanding, keeps me from taking another chance. Because what if I do allow myself to fall for him, only to get hurt worse later?

I crank the soreness out of my shoulder. “Not a chance. I’ve got more important things to worry about, like recording new videos for these not-love songs and figuring out my stupid backup plan college major.”

She stands, shrugging. “It was worth a shot.”

Once she leaves, I do a final practice run-through of my newest single, my debut back to writing original songs after ‘Amos and Adeline’. Readying the equipment on the other side of the room, I take a deep breath and start the recording.

“Hey y’all, my name is Emery Brooks, and I’m finally back with a new song just for you. I’ll admit, it’s been a struggle, but I’m getting my groove back. Here’s ‘Maybe Someday’.”
